Get Your Heat Pump Summer-Ready: Why a Spring Service Pays Off in Manawatū

Your heat pump does more than keep you warm
Spring has arrived in Manawatū, and the heater is getting a well-earned break. Before you forget about your heat pump until next June, remember that it can cool your home too.
Most heat pumps have a cooling mode that works like an air conditioner. On those hot, still afternoons in Palmerston North and Feilding, it can make the difference between a sticky night and a good night's sleep.
After months of running through winter, though, your unit has been pulling in dust, pet hair and moisture. A quick spring service now means it's clean, efficient and ready to go when the first heatwave hits, not three days into it.
Signs your heat pump needs a service
Not sure if yours is due? Watch out for these common warning signs:
A musty or damp smell when it starts up. This usually means mould or bacteria is building up on the coil or in the drain tray.
Weak airflow. Clogged filters and dirty fans make the unit work harder for less result.
Higher power bills with no change in how you use it. A dirty heat pump uses more electricity to reach the same temperature.
Strange noises like rattling, buzzing or clicking that weren't there before.
Water dripping from the indoor unit, often a sign of a blocked drain line.
It struggles to heat or cool, or takes much longer to reach the set temperature.
It hasn't been serviced in over 12 months. Most manufacturers recommend a professional service every year, and some warranties require it.
What you can do yourself
A few simple jobs between services will keep your heat pump running well:
Clean the filters every 2–3 months. Turn the unit off, lift the front cover and slide out the filters. Vacuum off the dust or rinse them in lukewarm water, let them dry fully, then pop them back in. Check your manual if you're unsure.
Wipe down the indoor unit. A damp cloth on the outside casing and louvres stops dust building up.
Clear around the outdoor unit. Keep at least 30cm clear around it. Pull out weeds, leaves and grass clippings, and don't stack firewood or bins against it.
Test cooling mode early. Switch it to cool on a warm spring day. If something isn't right, you'll find out before you really need it.
Avoid opening up the unit or spraying anything inside it. The internal parts carry electricity and refrigerant, so leave those to a qualified technician.
What a professional heat pump service includes
A professional service goes far deeper than a filter clean. When TKR Electrical services your heat pump, we:
Deep clean the filters, indoor coil and fan to remove built-up dust, mould and bacteria
Clear and flush the drain tray and line to prevent leaks and smells
Inspect and clean the outdoor unit, including the coil and fan
Check refrigerant pressures and look for leaks
Test electrical connections, wiring and controls for safety
Check heating and cooling performance and airflow
Let you know about any worn parts before they turn into a breakdown
The benefits add up. A clean unit runs more efficiently, so it costs less to run. It also gives you healthier air at home, which matters if anyone in the family has allergies or asthma. Plus, regular servicing helps your heat pump last longer, protecting what is a significant investment. (Thinking of upgrading instead? See our guide to heat pump costs in NZ.)
How to cool your home efficiently this summer
Once your heat pump is serviced, these settings will keep you comfortable without a nasty power bill:
Set it around 24–25°C. You don't need to set it to 18°C to feel cooler. Every degree lower makes the unit work harder.
Use Cool mode on hot days and Dry mode on muggy ones. Dry mode pulls moisture out of the air, which helps on those humid Manawatū days.
Leave the fan on Auto so the unit adjusts itself.
Shut doors and windows to the room you're cooling, and close curtains or blinds on the sunny side of the house.
Turn it on before the house heats up. It's easier to keep a room cool than to cool down a hot one.
Use the timer so it's not running in an empty house all day.
